Very pleased, working very well... we log the water purity once a week and it's really good because we have got the TDS meter so you can see the difference between when the water comes in and when it comes out. The reading should be 10 or less and it always comes out around 3 which is really good." Independent Review by Carbis Bay Dental Care
Background
Dental Surgeries might use distillers to purify their water. However these are expensive and have various disadvantages. For example, they produce the purified water slowly - which can be frustrating. They can also use significant amounts of electricity.
Or you might be getting ionised water delivered. This can be cheaper than a distiller but there's the hassle of stock control and deliveries plus the admin time in paying the regular invoices etc.
Another method for purifying your water is Reverse Osmosis (RO). This is a highly efficient way of purifying water, on demand, which is becoming an increasingly popular solution for UK dentists.
"We used to use a distiller in the decom room but it wasn't quick enough. This unit is far better. It fills a jug up in one go rather than having to wait around half the morning. And it's much more cost effective." Independent Review by Boroughbridge Dental Centre
How it Works
RO is a relatively quick, easy, one time installation. It filters your normal mains supply into medical grade water.
A semi-permeable membrane separates water molecules from larger ions or pollutants.
Our systems use the latest technology RO membranes for efficient performance and high yield production. They filter down to > 0.003 microns.
Plus it comes with a post-membrane demineralising cartridge and a TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) Meter.
This measures the electrical conductivity / quality of both your incoming and filtered water and helps you monitor the state of the crucial membrane filter.
The kit comes with a self tapping valve. No plumber is required. A normal handyman can fit the system easily - though some practices prefer to use a plumber.
This depends on the size of the tank and the incoming water pressure. RO is a very fine filtration process that slowly fills up a reserve tank.
The tank will be full in the morning. The water that comes through the tap is actually coming from the tank. As you draw water off the tank will begin to refill.
How fast the tank refills depends on your incoming water pressure. But, as an example, say you emptied the whole tank in one go, you should be able to draw a litre of water after about 10 or 15 minutes. If that happens often, you can simply order an extra tank to have a larger reservoir of water to draw from. (Or you can have one larger tank rather than two smaller ones). Either one would be very simple to retrofit . We'd be available on the phone to explain how to do it. So you could just start with the standard dental RO system and see how you get on.
"Very good product. We've had it for almost 4 years now. We set it up as an extra tap in the kitchen - which comes with the kit. We take the filtered water from that to fill the autoclave every couple of days... We used to use Ionised bottled water but it was fiddly... We also use it for the water going to the drills but add some altron for that. It's simple and highly cost effective compared to other options." Independent Review by Kim Senior Nurse / Fairoaks Surgery
Costs
Many UK dental surgeries can end up paying many hundreds of pounds - or even more - for their water purification systems.
This certainly isn't necessary.
It's important to note that Reverse Osmosis is a process. It doesn't have "degrees of performance" - it either works or it doesn't... So if you are paying a lot more for one RO system over another you need to ask why.
We have seen some dental surgeries who have been sold very expensive water filters which are basically ROs with a fancy cover - and possibly extra filtration such as Ultra Violet (UV) - which frankly just isn't necessary.
(UV is another highly effective method for killing bacteria etc. But it is designed for non-municipal water supplies. Adding it to an RO is completely unnecessary. The RO already deals with bacteria plus many more contaminants. But perhaps the extra UV helps justify a higher price tag!)
Special Offer: Even though our special dental surgery Reverse Osmosis filter systems are of a higher quality than many on the market, we are offering them to you here at a Special Sale price of only £367 plus VAT
More Information on Dental Practice Water Purifiers
RO filtration gives you very high quality purified water. It removes just about every contaminant you can think of.
(Many dangerous contaminants, like bacteria, are taken out at the water treatment plants. However other contaminants get left in, which RO will remove).
Be wary about buying a cheap RO.
Despite what we said above about RO being a "process", cheaply made and/or deteriorating parts can lead to tiny leaks between the seals within the system. This risks contamination of the end-water.
"It's good. We use it to feed the autoclave and all the water goes through it fine / it's never rejected. In fact we've recently bought another one for our other practice." Independent Review by Lowrie Farr, Manager, Roach-Price & Morris
The Issue of Waste Water
As part of the Reverse Osmosis filtering process about 60% to 70% of the incoming water is rejected.
The "waste / rejected water" is automatically sent down the drain.
However please note that this is only lost from the water supply you are filtering - ie to your sterilising equipment and not all the water you use in the surgery. So the cost of this wasted water isn't as big an issue as it might seem.
What's the Difference Between Reverse Osmosis And Distilled Water?
Many dental surgeries use distilled water. Reverse Osmosis and water distillation are totally differentprocesses.
A distiller boils water, catches the steam, and condenses it back into water, while Reverse Osmosis filters water through a semi-porous membrane.
Both systems rely on carbon water filters to remove some chemicals.
While Distillation removes sodium and other minerals better than Reverse Osmosis, they are not that good at removing volatile chemicals with a low boiling point.
However both processes produce very pure water. The only real difference is in the economics. Reverse Osmosis tends to be much better value at least compared to the ongoing service contracts charged to Dental practices by distilled water producers.
"We used to have a large distilled water machine which cost a fortune. We got this reverse osmosis filter when we moved into the new practice. We use it for the autoclaves and are very happy with it. There's no more waiting around for the distilled water. Now it's on tap whenever we need it so it saves us a lot of time. It works very well. Plus the replacement filters are very easy to fit." Independent Review by The Village Dentists / Cramlington
Installing The System
Everything you need is in the pack.
It's very easy to install. No plumber is necessary - unless perhaps you have a complex autoclave system.
The unit feeds to a 1/4 inch diameter pipe (6.4mm). These are the standard size and most autoclaves will accept them with a simple quick fit connection.
(Please note we can supply adapters if necessary - free of charge).
Or you may want to hand feed your steriliser - in which case you simply use the special dispensing tap that is included in your kit.
When installing the unit you might need a plumber if your undersink pipework is different from standard. But this should be a simple, one hour job for them at most.
Otherwise it is all designed to be done by someone who's basically competent at DIY.
Full instructions are included. It should take 20 or 30 minutes. As far as tools go, you will need a normal electric drill. That's all.
And we've got friendly (and free) support available.
Replacing Your Filters
Like all water filters you will need to replace the filters on the system periodically to ensure maximum performance.
You need to change four of the filters every 6 months.
"We're really pleased with this unit. It's easy to use and change the filters. The company is very helpful." Independent Review by Cote Royd Dental / Huddersfield
We send you free reminders.
The current cost for the full replacement kit is is £47.50 Plus VAT.
Replacing these is very easy and will take a few minutes at most.
Please note that these replacement parts will be easy to find anywhere. This is an important consideration in a market where many entrants come in - often with specially made filters with unique replacement parts - only to disappear.
Our units use agreed industry standard size cartridges, membranes and other parts. So in the unlikely event of our disappearing, you will never be left high and dry. (We've been in business for approx 10 years).
Every 3 years or so you will need to change the membrane filter.
You will know when to do this by monitoring your TDS meter readings. (Full instructions are supplied)
The current cost of a new membrane is £79.
All the required filters are included when you purchase the RO system.

Capacity / Production Rate - Gallons Per Day (GPD) 75 Gals
Feed temp (Degrees C) 4 to 29
Dimensions
RO unit: 49.5cm Height x 37.2cm wide x 19.5cm deep
Storage vessel is 40cm High x 27cm wide
The 12 Litre Tank / Storage Vessel (Freestanding, connected to RO unit by tube, can be placed several yards away - simply ask us for some extra tubing).
The unit should be fed by a water supply that is potable i.e. drinkable.
Please note that Reverse Osmosis is a complex process requiring reliable equipment performing under high pressure. Always know where your water main stopcock is located in the unlikely event of leaks.
The filter system doesn't have to be at a level below the tap and neither does the tank as long as it's not a gravity fed system.
This model will produce 75 GPD ie its "production rate" is 75 gallons per day.
(This assumes perfect conditions ie clean water at the right temperature and that incoming pressure is good).
But when considering how much water is produced by any Reverse Osmosis filter, the most important factor is the size of your RO tank.
This is because your system feeds the tank then stops when it's full.
Here's how it works: When you draw water from your RO you are taking water from the tank. As the tank empties the system refills it at the "production rate" (ie 50 GPD) up to the tank's capacity.
Now, in addition to this, you have to consider that the tank's size is based on the actual physical dimension and not the amount of water it contains.
You have to also take into account the internal bladder that holds the water inside of the tank.
For example, the bladder inside this unit's nominal 12 litre tank will actually hold between 5 to 9 litres of water. If you draw all the water out of the tank it will take anywhere from half an hour to 4 hours to fill up again - depending on incoming water pressure.
Therefore the amount of water this size produces is 5 to 9 litres per average of 2 hours - on a stop/start basis. (Note that you only have to wait for more water if you fully drain the tank in one go. In our experience this happens very rarely with normal domestic usage).
Other typical tank sizes and the actual water they hold are:
18L nominal tank size: Holds 12 to 15 Litres
40L nominal tank size: Holds 23 to 28 Litres
For High Flow / High Capacity Reverse Osmosis systems click here
The simplest way to check your water pressure is to turn your cold water tap in the kitchen on full. Stand a few feet away. If you are being splashed with at least a few droplets then your pressure should be high enough.
If this is not happening, your local water supplier should be able to tell you what your water pressure is and whether it is likely to drop below 40 psi at any time.
The Unit is NOT designed to filter HOT water. It should only filter water at ambient temperature. (Feed temp = 4 to 29 degrees C).
However please note that our Reverse Osmosis units are often used to supply filtered water to hot/boiling water taps and other systems where the temperature is changed. That is fine. But the system itself should not filter hot water.
What are the Materials Inside the Reverse Osmosis Tanks?
Some people are concerned about the materials the RO tanks are made from and how it might impact their purified water.
This is understandable:
Who wants to filter their water carefully only for it to be somehow polluted in the storage vessel while waiting to be used!
(Just to be clear: RO filtration is a highly effective but slow process. Rather than you waiting for the filter to produce enough water for you, the system purifies the water slowly and fills up the storage vessel / tank. When you turn on the RO drinking tap there's several litres of filtered water waiting for you. The system then refills the tank with whatever you took out).
Our RO tanks / storage vessels are made from highly durable steel. The water doesn't touch this - which is a good thing or the highly purified water could cause the metal to release chromium oxide into the water!
Instead, the water is stored inside an airtight rubber bladder / diaphragm.
This is made from "butyl rubber" which is lined with polypropylene - a commonly used food grade plastic (see "Hazard data" below).
All these materials are industry standard. We have never come across and other type of materials for Reverse Osmosis storage tanks - and, collectively, we've been in water filtration for over 50 years.
(Bear in mind that after leaving the tank the water is purified even further by the post filters).
Polypropylene Hazard Data:
No negative health effects and symptoms.
No negative physical and chemical effects.
No hazard for environment.
