Water Filter Cartridge Change Times
We don't use the filter much. Do we need to change it as often?
Regardless of how much water has gone through your filter you should always change it at the recommended time.
This is to avoid the build up of dangerous bacteria.
(Because chlorine is removed, bacteria can grow up inside the filter more easily).
The changeover time starts once the filter is wet.
For example; say you fit your six month filter, use it for a day then go away for 5 months. Even though the filter has sat unused, you should still change it in Month 6.
Water Filter Storage
If kept in their original packaging and stored in a cool dry place most water filters can be stored for three years.
Exceptions might be with specialist filtration media. But this would be unusual and the manufacturer would likely make this clear on the labelling.
Are Water Filter Lifespan Timescales a Con?
Please note these timespans are an industry standard precaution.
It is not a case of the industry conspiring to fleece customers. It is to avoid being sued for serious harm.
For example, consider that the major manufacturers of fridges that use water filters actually install built in warning lights timed to come on after 6 months.
These add to their costs but these large brands often don’t make any money from filter renewals.
They would be unlikely to fit these warning systems if there wasn't good reason.
