Troubleshooting Reverse Osmosis | Noise Issues
Solving Reverse Osmosis Water Filter Issues
Noise Issues
First check the unit has been installed correctly see how here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=naPWgTt5b68
If you’re happy everything looks OK then…please see these simple checks below
If you’re hearing a noise this is likely to be one of three things:
A) High pitched whine
B) Humming from the RO unit
C) Gurgling noise - the water drains noisily
D) Beeping / alerts (on a pumped system)
E) Other causes
Please check the relevant section below.
A) RE HIGH PITCHED WHINE
The sound is Resonance.
This is the high speed / vibration (ie banging) or it can be a jack-hammer sound during the fill process.
This is caused by restrictions in the shut-off valve, supply line or fill valve.
If this was happening on a normal tap you would have to turn it off and on again at various speeds to clear the air blockage.
SOLUTION FOR HIGH PITCHED WHINE
Open all the taps / valves and drain the system.
Then turn off the water supply connection.
Then open the water supply connection again.
If necessary, turn the tap (ie on the sinktop / where you pour the water from) on/off in a fast / random pattern
Keep doing this, using different patterns if necessary, and it will solve it.
B) HUMMING NOISE
The most likely cause for a lower level hum is Membrane failure.
This is probably caused by age of the membrane - they should last three years but this can be less if the pre filters aren’t changed regularly (every six months) or in extreme cases if the incoming water's limescale level is very high.
SOLUTION TO HUMMING
The solution is to replace your membrane
If you have an old reverse osmosis unit it is also a good idea to also change your four way valve to make sure it hasn’t been damaged by scale etc
C) GURGLING NOISE
The drain clamp connection is probably too close to your sink plug hole.
Move it as far away as possible - on the below sink pipe - while keeping it above the U-Bend pipe.
D) BEEPING Noise
This is a warning / alarm on a pumped RO system. You will see the error code on the display (on top of the RO unit). Refer to your instructions. Or check these RO Pumped Display Codes
E) OTHER CAUSES
Are any of the RO systems tubes resting on something? The vibration might cause noise.
Do you hear the sound all the time? Is this sound there all the time ie 24/7? Or only sometimes? When the tank stops filling up the RO shuts off. So if you’re hearing noise all the time it won't be the water moving through the RO. Look further afield. The sound might not be coming from the RO.
Please note; none of these simple checks / actions require any expertise.
If you cannot do them yourself, you could ask a local handyperson.
